Dr Elena Zaikova is a Bioinformatics Scientist who performs sequence data analysis to support and help advance research efforts in the lab. She holds a BSc in Marine Biology and a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology, both from the University of British Columbia. Elena in fascinated by drawing biological insights from various omics analyses made possible by advances in sequencing technologies, and has pursued research in this vein. Her research into how microbial communities form, function and evolve has taken her to diverse field sites including coastal Pacific Northwest, the Antarctic Dry Valleys, the Atacama Desert, and more. Dr Zaikova is passionate about contributing her expertise to help improve quality of life as well as making science more accessible. When not in front of her computer, Elena enjoys talking and thinking about science, gardening, and can often be found enjoying the great outdoors.
